Wine country with a serious ski mountain an hour behind it

Kelowna is the Okanagan's city — a lake, a long beach, and the densest concentration of wineries in Canada — and Big White Ski Resort is an hour east, high enough to be reliably deep when the valley is grey.

Kelowna grew from an Oblate mission of the 1860s into the commercial centre of the Okanagan, and its modern character comes from two things: fruit and then wine on the benches, and a steady inflow of people from colder parts of Canada. It is the fastest-growing city in the province, which means the lakeshore is increasingly towers and the traffic on Highway 97 is genuinely bad, but it also means an airport with real service and a restaurant scene a town this size would not otherwise support.

Big White Ski Resort, an hour east and 1,700 metres up, is the winter draw. Its defining feature is elevation: the village sits high enough that it is almost always snow-covered and frequently inside the cloud, which produces the rimed "snow ghost" trees the resort is known for and, less romantically, a lot of flat light. The terrain is broad and forgiving with steeper pockets, the village is genuinely ski-in and ski-out, and it is one of the most family-oriented big mountains in Canada.

Forty minutes closer to the city, Apex and Crystal Mountain serve day trips, and the cross-country at Kelowna Nordic is a short drive. In summer the proportions invert entirely: the lake, the beaches, the rail trail and the wineries, and a city that gets genuinely hot.

Living Here

Practical notes for residents

The season

  • Ski season runs roughly late November to early April, with the highest terrain holding into late April or May in a good year. Opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every season — check the resort before booking flights around them.
  • Big White usually opens in late November and runs to early April, and its elevation makes it one of the more snow-reliable resorts in the interior.
  • Valley inversions are common: Kelowna can sit under grey cloud for days while the mountain is in sun above it, or the reverse. Neither predicts the other.

Getting there and around

  • Kelowna International is the busiest airport in the interior, with direct flights from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and seasonal international service.
  • Big White is about an hour from the airport with a scheduled shuttle in season; a car is unnecessary if you are staying in the village.
  • In the city a car is hard to avoid — it is spread along the lake and transit is thin.

When the snow goes

  • Big White runs summer lift-served downhill mountain biking and hiking from late June.
  • The Okanagan Rail Trail and the Myra Canyon trestles on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail are the two rides worth planning around; Myra Canyon is spectacular and easy.
  • Lake swimming, paddleboarding and the wineries — over 200 in the valley — are what most summer visitors come for.

Practicalities

  • Kelowna General Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the southern interior.
  • Wildfire is a real seasonal risk in July and August, and smoke can close in for days. Check conditions before committing to a summer trip.

Moving here

  • Kelowna is the fastest-growing city in British Columbia, and the consequences are visible: housing costs have risen sharply, the lakeshore is increasingly towers, and Highway 97 through the middle is genuinely congested.
  • The Mission and Lower Mission are the established family areas near the lake; Glenmore and Rutland are the value end; Lake Country north is where the newer growth and the wineries are.
  • The rental market is tight and strongly seasonal, with student demand from UBC Okanagan each September.

Health, schools & services

  • Kelowna General is the tertiary referral centre for the southern interior — cardiac surgery, oncology and trauma are all here rather than in Vancouver.
  • UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College give the city a substantial student population and a research economy alongside the orchards and tourism.
  • Kelowna International is the busiest airport in the interior, with direct flights to Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and seasonal international service — a real advantage over the rest of the valley.

What newcomers get wrong

  • Wildfire. This is a serious and recurring risk — the 2003 and 2023 fires both reached the city — and smoke can settle for days in July and August. It belongs in any decision to move here.
  • The traffic. A city of this size should not have a commute, and the single highway through the centre means it does.
  • Assuming Big White is close. It is an hour each way up a mountain road, which is fine for a weekend and wearing as a daily commute.
