The East Kootenay's service town, and the airport everyone flies into
Cranbrook is not a ski resort and does not pretend to be. It is the regional centre for the East Kootenay — the hospital, the airport, the shopping — and it puts Kimberley, Fernie and the Columbia Valley all within an hour.
Cranbrook sits in the Rocky Mountain Trench, with the Purcells to the west and the Rockies to the east, and it grew because the Canadian Pacific put its line through here in the 1890s rather than through the older settlement at Fort Steele up the road — a decision that made Cranbrook and unmade Fort Steele, which survives as a heritage town you can visit. It was incorporated in 1905 and has been the practical capital of the East Kootenay ever since.
For a visitor the value is logistical and it is considerable. Canadian Rockies International Airport has scheduled service from Vancouver and Calgary; Kimberley Alpine Resort is 20 minutes away, Fernie about an hour east, Panorama and the Columbia Valley hot springs an hour or so north, and Whitefish in Montana is a reasonable drive south. Accommodation and food are priced for a working town rather than a resort, which over a week adds up.
The town's own attraction is the Cranbrook History Centre, which holds an unusually good collection of restored Canadian Pacific passenger cars — including sets built for the trans-Canada luxury trains — and is worth an afternoon on a weather day. Beyond that, the draw is the Trench itself: dry, open, big-sky country with mountains on both sides.

The season
- Cranbrook has no ski area of its own, but it is the base for several. Kimberley is 20 minutes, Fernie about an hour, Panorama and Kicking Horse further north — all broadly running late November or early December to early April.
- Ski season runs roughly late November to early April, with the highest terrain holding into late April or May in a good year. Opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every season — check the resort before booking flights around them.
- The Trench is dry and cold in winter with far less snow than the surrounding mountains. Clear roads in town say nothing about the passes.
Getting there and around
- Canadian Rockies International Airport is the region's airport, with scheduled flights from Vancouver and Calgary. Calgary is about three and a half hours northeast over the passes.
- A car is essential — the point of staying here is reaching the places around it.
When the snow goes
- The Rails to Trails route to Kimberley and the trails on Community Forest land give easy riding and walking from town.
- Fly fishing on the St Mary, Bull and Elk rivers is excellent and guided out of the region.
- Whitewater rafting on the Elk and the lakes of the Columbia Valley are both within an hour, and Kootenay National Park is about two.
Practicalities
- East Kootenay Regional Hospital is here, and it is the referral centre for the whole East Kootenay.
- This is the place to buy anything you forgot: it has the only full-scale shopping between Calgary and the Okanagan.
Moving here
- Cranbrook is the service centre for the East Kootenay, which is exactly what makes it a sensible base and a modest place to live: the hospital, the airport, the shopping and the trades are all here, and the housing is priced for a working town.
- It is also the cheapest way to live within an hour of several ski resorts — Kimberley 20 minutes, Fernie about an hour, with Panorama and the Columbia Valley north.
- The Trench is dry and open with cold, clear winters; this is not the wet interior and not the Rockies proper.
Health, schools & services
- East Kootenay Regional Hospital is here and is the referral centre for the whole region — a genuine advantage over the surrounding resort towns.
- College of the Rockies is headquartered in Cranbrook, and the schools serve a wide rural catchment.
- Canadian Rockies International Airport has scheduled service to Vancouver and Calgary; Calgary itself is about three and a half hours over the passes.
What newcomers get wrong
- Expecting a resort. Cranbrook is deliberately practical — the attraction is what it puts within reach, not the town itself.
- The winter driving. Highway 3 over the Crowsnest and the passes west close for weather, and a flight out of Calgary needs a buffer day in January.
- Underrating the History Centre. The restored Canadian Pacific passenger cars are a genuinely significant collection and the best indoor afternoon in the region.
