The most multicultural city on earth, quietly getting on with it
Toronto is Canada's largest city and its economic engine, a place where more than half the residents were born abroad and nobody finds that remarkable. It is not showy; it is simply where the country happens.
The British founded York in 1793 as the capital of Upper Canada, on a harbour sheltered by the Toronto Islands; it was renamed Toronto in 1834 and grew through the 19th century as a Protestant, orderly, rather dull provincial city — 'Toronto the Good', they called it, and not entirely as a compliment. The transformation came after 1945: immigration from Italy, Portugal, the Caribbean, China, India, the Philippines and everywhere else, and Montreal's loss of business to Toronto in the 1970s, made it Canada's largest city and one of the most diverse in the world. Around half of Torontonians were born outside Canada.
The city is organised around its streetcar and subway lines and its neighbourhoods, which are the point. Downtown holds the financial district, the CN Tower, the waterfront and the entertainment district; Kensington Market and Chinatown are the old immigrant core just west; Queen West runs out through the galleries and boutiques to Parkdale and Roncesvalles; the Danforth is Greek, Little Italy is on College, and beyond the old city the inner suburbs — Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, amalgamated in 1998 — are where most of the population and the best cheap food live.
It is a serious cultural city that undersells itself: the Toronto International Film Festival in September, the AGO and the ROM, a theatre scene second only to New York's in North America, and a music history from Neil Young to Drake. The food is the city's real claim: every cuisine, done by people from the place it comes from, at every price. The Raptors' 2019 title and the Leafs' eternal disappointment are the civic religion.
The hard parts are housing — among the most expensive in North America, with a condo skyline that has not made it cheaper — and the winters, which are long, grey and cold, though milder than the prairie's. The transit is good in the core and poor beyond it, and the city has been arguing about how to extend it for fifty years. What it offers is a safe, functional, deeply tolerant big city with a lake at its feet and the whole of Canada's ambition concentrated in it.

Downtown & the Waterfront
The financial district, the CN Tower and the aquarium, the harbourfront and the ferry to the Toronto Islands — the best view of the skyline and the city's beach.
Kensington Market & Chinatown
The old immigrant heart: Kensington's vintage shops, cafés and open-air market, beside the Spadina Chinatown's restaurants and groceries. Pedestrian Sundays in summer.
Queen West & Ossington
The strip of galleries, boutiques and bars running west from downtown, with Trinity Bellwoods park and Ossington's restaurants. Where the city goes out.
The Annex & Yorkville
The University of Toronto's leafy neighbourhood of Victorian houses and bookshops, and Yorkville's luxury shops and the ROM just south.
Leslieville & the Beaches
The east end — Leslieville's brunch and antiques on Queen East, then the Beaches' boardwalk and lakefront neighbourhood. Family territory.
The Danforth
Greektown along the Danforth east of the viaduct — tavernas, the Taste of the Danforth festival — and the ravines that thread through this side of the city.
Scarborough & North York
The inner suburbs with the best and cheapest Asian, Caribbean and South Asian food in the country, the Scarborough Bluffs on the lake, and most of the city's people.

Getting about
- The TTC runs the subway (three lines plus the new Line 5 Eglinton), the streetcars that are the city's signature, and a large bus network; a PRESTO card or contactless tap works on all of them and on GO Transit's regional trains and buses.
- The core is walkable and flat; Bike Share Toronto is extensive and the waterfront trail runs the length of the city. Winter cycling is for the committed.
- Pearson airport is 25 minutes downtown on the UP Express train; Billy Bishop, on the islands, is a short tunnel or ferry from the waterfront for regional flights. Union Station has GO and VIA trains — Montreal is five hours, Ottawa four.
- A car is unnecessary downtown and the traffic is notorious; the Gardiner and the 401 are the arteries everyone dreads.
Health
- Toronto General, Mount Sinai, St Michael's, Sunnybrook and SickKids (among the world's best children's hospitals) anchor a major medical district around University Avenue. Ontario's OHIP covers residents; care is free at the point of use.
- Dial 911. Pharmacies (Shoppers Drug Mart everywhere) are the first stop for minor problems; walk-in clinics take patients without appointments.
- Visitors should carry travel insurance; emergency care is given but billed to non-residents.
Work & study
- The University of Toronto is Canada's largest and highest-ranked; Toronto Metropolitan, York and OCAD (art and design) add to a huge student population.
- Finance (the big five banks and the TSX are here), tech (the largest cluster in Canada, with a strong AI research community), media, film production, healthcare and the head offices of most of the country's large companies.
- The city is the immigration hub of Canada, and credential recognition and the cost of housing are the two things newcomers talk about most.
Money & manners
- Canadian dollars; cards and tap are universal. Tip 15–20% in restaurants; HST (13%) is added at the register.
- Toronto is polite, punctual and reserved by the standards of its own diversity — an apology is a greeting, a queue is sacred, and loud is unusual. It warms up quickly on acquaintance.
- Winter runs November to March; dress for it and use the PATH, the 30-kilometre underground walkway beneath downtown. Summer on the islands and the patios is the reward.
