The quiet end of the Canadian Rockies, with a mountain you can have to yourself

Jasper is further north, harder to reach and far less crowded than Banff, and Marmot Basin above it has the highest base elevation in Canada and almost none of the queues.

Jasper National Park was established in 1907 and is the largest in the Canadian Rockies — bigger than Banff, with a fraction of the visitors, largely because it is four hours from Calgary rather than ninety minutes. The town sits on the Athabasca River as a Canadian National railway division point, and still works as one. It is also a Dark Sky Preserve, one of the largest in the world, which in practice means the aurora is a realistic prospect on a clear winter night.

Marmot Basin, twenty minutes above town, is the least crowded major ski area in the Canadian Rockies. It has the highest base elevation of any Canadian resort, which helps the snow hold, and a layout that fans out from a single base area across a broad face — nothing enormous, but a genuine variety of terrain and, on most days, no queue worth mentioning. For a skier who values space over statistics it is the best value in the Rockies.

In July 2024 a wildfire burned through part of the townsite and the surrounding valley, destroying a significant number of buildings. Recovery is ongoing, some businesses and trails remain affected, and anyone planning a visit should check current conditions with Parks Canada and Tourism Jasper rather than relying on older accounts — including this one.

Living Here

Practical notes for residents

The season

  • Ski season runs roughly late November to early April, with the highest terrain holding into late April or May in a good year. Opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every season — check the resort before booking flights around them.
  • Marmot Basin usually runs from early or mid-November to early May. Its high base elevation makes early-season conditions more dependable than most of the Rockies.
  • Jasper is colder than Banff and noticeably drier. Expect genuine cold snaps in January, and dress for them rather than for coastal snow.

Getting there and around

  • Edmonton International is about four hours east and Calgary about four and a half south — there is no closer airport with scheduled service.
  • VIA Rail's Canadian stops here, as does the Rocky Mountaineer in season; arriving by train is genuinely practical and unusually pleasant.
  • A park pass is required. The townsite is walkable and a ski shuttle runs to Marmot in season, but a car helps for the Icefields Parkway.

When the snow goes

  • Whitewater rafting on the Athabasca and the Sunwapta runs through summer, from gentle float trips to genuine rapids.
  • Downhill and cross-country mountain biking on an extensive valley network, with trails from the edge of town.
  • Hiking from the Skyline Trail — one of Canada's best multi-day ridge walks — down to short valley walks, plus Maligne Lake and the boat to Spirit Island.
  • Check which trails and facilities have reopened after the 2024 wildfire before planning around any of them.

Practicalities

  • Seton General Hospital is in the townsite; Edmonton handles anything major.
  • Elk rut in September and early October makes the townsite genuinely hazardous — keep well clear.

Moving here

  • Jasper is inside a national park and operates under need-to-reside rules: living here requires a qualifying connection to the local economy, and housing is scarce and largely employer-linked.
  • The July 2024 wildfire destroyed a significant part of the townsite, and recovery and rebuilding are ongoing — anyone considering moving should check the current housing and services position directly rather than relying on older accounts.
  • Hinton, about 70 km east and outside the park, is where people live when they cannot live in Jasper.

Health, schools & services

  • Seton General Hospital is in the townsite; Edmonton, about four hours, handles anything major.
  • Schooling is local through secondary.
  • There is no nearby airport with scheduled service — Edmonton four hours, Calgary four and a half. VIA Rail's Canadian stops here, which is slow but genuinely useful.

What newcomers get wrong

  • The cold and the dark. Jasper is further north and drier than Banff, with real January cold snaps and short winter days.
  • The elk. The autumn rut makes the townsite genuinely hazardous in September and early October, and this is not a precaution to take lightly.
  • Assuming the 2024 fire is history. It reshaped the town and the valley, and both the landscape and the services are still changing.
