A town inside a park inside the mountains
Banff is Canada's first national park and the town that exists only because of it — 8,000 residents in a valley of turquoise lakes and glaciers that four million people a year come to see. Living here is a privilege the park grants on conditions.
Three railway workers found hot springs at the foot of Sulphur Mountain in 1883; the Canadian Pacific Railway, laying its line through the Bow Valley, saw the tourist potential; and in 1885 the government reserved the springs as Canada's first national park. The CPR built the Banff Springs Hotel in 1888 to give its passengers a reason to stop — 'since we can't export the scenery, we shall have to import the tourists', said its president — and the town grew around the station and the hotel as the park's service centre. It has been a resort ever since.
The town is unusual in one respect that governs everything: it sits inside a national park, on federal land, and you may only live there if you work there. Parks Canada's 'need to reside' rule keeps the population to those employed in the valley, caps the town's footprint, and means the housing is scarce, shared and expensive — the seasonal workers who staff the hotels and shops live in staff accommodation and bunkhouses. The result is a young, transient, international town of ski bums and hospitality staff, with a small core of long-term residents, and a fierce attachment to the place among both.
The park is the point. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, the icefields parkway to the Columbia glacier, the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain, the hot springs, Johnston Canyon, the Bow River's walks — and elk on the golf course, bighorn sheep on the road and the occasional grizzly on the trail, all treated with the respect the park insists on. Winter brings three ski areas (Sunshine, Lake Louise, Norquay), ice walks and frozen lakes; summer the trails, the lakes and the crowds. Shoulder seasons — late spring and the golden larches of late September — are when residents get the place back.
The town itself is a compact grid of Banff Avenue's shops, restaurants and pubs under the mountains, walkable end to end, with the Whyte Museum's local history and the Cave and Basin where it all began. Calgary is ninety minutes east down the Trans-Canada; Canmore, just outside the park gate, is where people who cannot get a Banff address live. It is expensive, spectacular, and — for those who can stay — one of the most beautiful places on earth to call home.

Banff Avenue & the townsite
The main street of shops, gear stores, restaurants and bars running up to Cascade Mountain's backdrop — the whole town is a ten-minute walk.
Banff Springs & Bow Falls
The castle hotel above the falls and the golf course, the Bow River walk, and the Fairmont's grand public rooms — worth a look even if you are not staying.
Sulphur Mountain & the hot springs
The gondola to the summit boardwalk, the Upper Hot Springs pool and the Cave and Basin's original springs — the reason the park exists.
Tunnel Mountain
The residential hill above town with the campgrounds, the hoodoos trail and the easiest summit walk in the park, straight from the townsite.
Lake Louise & Moraine Lake
An hour up the valley — the two iconic turquoise lakes, the château, the tea houses on the hiking trails and, in winter, the ski area. Moraine Lake road is shuttle-only now.
Canmore
The town just outside the park gate, 20 minutes east — where the Bow Valley's long-term residents, climbers and Nordic skiers live, with its own restaurant scene and no residency rule.

Getting about
- The townsite is walkable. Roam Transit buses link Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise, the gondola and the hot springs cheaply; in summer, Parks Canada shuttles are the only way to reach Moraine Lake and the best way to Lake Louise, and must be booked.
- Bikes are ideal for the Legacy Trail to Canmore and the townsite; e-bikes help with the hills. Winter roads need snow tyres by law.
- Calgary International (YYC) is 90 minutes east; shuttle buses run several times a day. There is no passenger rail stop (the Rocky Mountaineer excursion train passes through). The Trans-Canada Highway is the only road in and out.
- Parking in town is tight and increasingly paid; the park's shuttle-and-transit model is deliberate. A park pass is required for every vehicle entering.
Health
- Banff Mineral Springs Hospital is a small acute-care hospital with an emergency department; serious cases are transferred to Canmore or Calgary. Alberta Health covers residents.
- Dial 911. There is a pharmacy in town. Mountain hazards are the real risk — altitude, weather that changes in an hour, avalanche terrain in winter and wildlife at any time. Carry bear spray on the trails and know how to use it.
- Visitors should carry travel insurance that covers mountain rescue; helicopter evacuation is not free.
Work & study
- Hospitality is almost the entire economy — hotels, restaurants, ski areas, guiding and Parks Canada itself. Seasonal work is plentiful and comes with staff housing; working-holiday visas bring a large international workforce each year.
- The 'need to reside' rule means you must have a job in the park to live in the town; most applications and housing go through employers.
- The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is a world-renowned residency and conference institution on Tunnel Mountain; there is no university, though Calgary's are close.
Money & manners
- Canadian dollars; cards and tap everywhere. Tip 15–20%. Prices are resort prices — expect a premium on everything, and book accommodation months ahead for summer and the ski season.
- Wildlife rules are law: do not approach, feed or stop the car in the road for animals; keep 30 metres from elk and 100 from bears. Stay on the trail and pack out everything.
- The town is friendly, outdoorsy and young; the après-ski pub culture is real. Say hello on the trail. Respect the seasonal staff — they run the place.
