The biggest vertical in North America, in a railway town that never cashed in

Revelstoke Mountain Resort has the longest lift-served descent on the continent, and the town at its foot is still a working Canadian Pacific division point rather than a resort village. That gap is the whole appeal.

Revelstoke exists because of the railway. The Canadian Pacific pushed through Rogers Pass in the 1880s and the town grew as the division point where crews changed and helper engines were added for the climb east — a job it still does, which is why freight horns punctuate the night and why the street grid is brick and sensible rather than alpine-cute. It was incorporated in 1899 and named for Lord Revelstoke, the London banker whose house rescued the CPR's finances.

The resort came late. Revelstoke Mountain Resort opened in 2007, a century after the town, and immediately held the greatest lift-served vertical in North America — over 1,700 metres from summit to base. It is a mountain of long, sustained fall-line descents rather than a network of groomed boulevards, and it rewards people who can ski all day without stopping. Above the lifts, Selkirk Tangiers runs heli-skiing and the cat operations work the Monashees; this is the part of the world where that industry was invented.

The snow comes off the Pacific, crosses the Columbia and arrives heavy and frequent — this is interior BC but not the dry interior, and the snowpack reflects it. The town has not been rebuilt around the resort: you stay downtown, eat on Mackenzie Avenue, and drive or shuttle the few minutes up. For a mountain of this scale that arrangement is unusual, and for anyone who finds purpose-built villages wearing it is the reason to come here instead of Whistler.

The original brick commercial core, restored rather than themed — restaurants, a grocery, the Revelstoke Railway Museum and the Visual Arts Centre within a few blocks.

Arrow Heights & the resort base

The slope-side development between town and the gondola. Newer, quieter, and where most ski-in accommodation sits.

Columbia Park & Southside

Residential flats by the river, the cheaper end of the rental market and a short drive from everything.

Rogers Pass

An hour east through Glacier National Park: the highway avalanche-control corridor, serious ski touring, and the Trans-Canada's most closure-prone stretch in winter.

Practical notes for residents

The season

Ski season runs roughly late November to early April, with the highest terrain holding into late April or May in a good year. Opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every season — check the resort before booking flights around them.
Mid-January to early March is the reliable deep-snow window. December can be thin at the base even when the alpine is good, because the base elevation is low for the interior.
Rogers Pass closes for avalanche control without much notice. If you are driving in from Calgary or Golden in winter, check DriveBC before you set out and keep a day of slack either side of a flight.

Getting there and around

There is no airport with scheduled service. Kelowna is about two and a half hours southwest, Kamloops about two hours west, and Calgary about four and a half hours east over Rogers Pass — the longest leg and the one weather closes.
The town is walkable; the resort is a few minutes' drive or a shuttle ride from downtown. A car is close to essential outside the ski shuttle's hours.

When the snow goes

Whitewater rafting on the Illecillewaet and the Columbia runs through summer, with commercial trips from town.
The resort runs lift-served downhill mountain biking, and the Mount Macpherson trails south of town are the cross-country network locals use.
Hiking in Mount Revelstoke National Park: the Meadows in the Sky Parkway drives to subalpine meadows that flower in late July and early August, which is the single best short walk in the area.

Practicalities

Queen Victoria Hospital serves the town; anything major goes to Kelowna or Kamloops.
A small permanent population and a large seasonal one means winter accommodation books far ahead and summer rarely does.

Moving here

Revelstoke has a working economy — Canadian Pacific is still a major employer and the division point still operates — which makes it less resort-dependent than most ski towns, but housing has tightened sharply since the resort opened in 2007.
Downtown and Columbia Park are the established residential areas; Arrow Heights is the newer development between town and the gondola.
Short-term rental conversion is the local pressure point, as it is across BC, and the regulations have been changing — check current rules before buying anything as an investment.

Health, schools & services

Queen Victoria Hospital serves the town; Kelowna and Kamloops, two to two and a half hours away, take anything major.
Schooling is local through secondary; post-secondary means leaving.
There is no airport with scheduled service. Kelowna is about two and a half hours, Kamloops two, Calgary four and a half over Rogers Pass — and the pass closes for avalanche control.

What newcomers get wrong

Rogers Pass. It shuts without much notice for avalanche control, and a flight out of Calgary in winter needs a buffer day. This is the single biggest practical constraint on living here.
The snow volume. Revelstoke gets a great deal of it, and clearing a driveway is a genuine recurring chore rather than an occasional one.
Assuming the resort runs the town. It does not — the railway, the forestry and the dams do, and the town's character is the better for it.
