The adventure capital, on a lake that looks painted
Queenstown is a resort town of around 30,000 on Lake Wakatipu in the Southern Alps that takes several million visitor nights a year and invented commercial bungy jumping. It is the most beautiful town in New Zealand and the most expensive, and it knows both.
Māori came through the Wakatipu basin for pounamu (greenstone) and moa long before Europeans, but nobody lived here permanently. William Rees took up a sheep run on the lakeshore in 1860; two years later gold was found in the Arrow river and the Shotover, and the town that grew on Rees's run was declared in 1863 — the Shotover was for a while called the richest river in the world. When the gold ran out the miners left; the Chinese miners who stayed are remembered in their restored huts at Arrowtown, and Queenstown became a sleepy lake resort reached by the steamer Earnslaw, launched in 1912. Skiing at Coronet Peak from 1947, the first commercial jet-boat rides on the Shotover in the 1960s and AJ Hackett's bungy off the Kawarau bridge in 1988 made it the 'adventure capital of the world'. Tourism has since multiplied the population several times over.
The town sits on a bay at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, the S-shaped lake some 80 kilometres long, under the Remarkables to the east and Ben Lomond behind. The town centre is compact — the Mall, the lakefront, the gardens on the peninsula and the Skyline gondola up Bob's Peak — and everything else spreads along the lake and up the valleys. Fernhill and Sunshine Bay are west along the Glenorchy road; Frankton, eight kilometres east at the lake's outlet, is the airport, the supermarkets and where the locals shop; Kelvin Heights and Jack's Point are the golf and lake-view suburbs across the Frankton Arm. Arrowtown, 20 minutes north-east, is the preserved gold town with the autumn colours; Glenorchy, 45 minutes up the lake, is the end of the road and the start of the Routeburn; Wānaka, over the Crown Range, is the quieter rival. Gibbston and Cromwell are the wine.
The point is the outdoors, at every speed: bungy at Kawarau and the Nevis, jet boats on the Shotover, skiing at Coronet Peak and the Remarkables from June to September (Cardrona and Treble Cone are an hour away), mountain biking on the Queenstown Trail and the gondola-served downhill, the Ben Lomond hike, the Routeburn and Milford tracks beyond, and the Earnslaw's steam across to Walter Peak. Fergburger's queue is the town's one joke that is also true; beyond it the food has grown up — Central Otago pinot noir from Gibbston and Bannockburn, lamb, a serious restaurant scene at the top and pie shops at the bottom. The Winter Festival in June, the marathon in November and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival are the calendar. Nights are loud: this is a town of working-holiday bar staff and stag parties, and the lakefront after eleven feels like it.
The hard parts are cost and crowding. Housing is the most expensive in New Zealand relative to local wages, seasonal workers sleep in vans and shared rooms, and rents and restaurant prices are set for visitors. The town is over capacity at the summer and winter peaks — the airport, the road into Frankton and the gondola queue show it — and the council has been openly debating how much more it can take. The weather is alpine: snow to the town in winter, days below freezing, and summers that swing from 30°C to sleet in an afternoon. The adventure sports carry real risk, and the Crown Range and the Milford road need care in ice. Crime is low, but drink-driving and car break-ins at trailheads happen. What it offers is a lake and mountains of a beauty that stops arguments, a working small town with world-class food and wine, and every outdoor thing there is within an hour.

Fernhill & Sunshine Bay
The hillside suburbs west of town along the Glenorchy road, with lake views, holiday apartments and the start of the Sunshine Bay lakeside track. Quieter, and a short bus ride from the centre.
Frankton
The working end of town at the lake's outlet: the airport, the hospital, the supermarkets and big-box shops, and the Remarkables Park mall. Where the locals actually live and shop.
Kelvin Heights & Jack's Point
Across the Frankton Arm on the peninsula — the golf course, the lakeside walk and the big houses, then Jack's Point's planned village under the Remarkables further south.
Arthurs Point & the Shotover
Ten minutes north over the hill: the Shotover jet boats, the old Edith Cavell bridge, Onsen hot pools and the road up to Coronet Peak and Skippers Canyon.
Arrowtown
The preserved 1860s gold town 20 minutes away — the miners' cottages on Buckingham Street, the Chinese settlement on the river, autumn colour in April and a good pub or two.
Gibbston Valley
The 'valley of the vines' along the Kawarau gorge: pinot noir cellar doors, the Kawarau bungy bridge, and the cycle trail that links the wineries to Arrowtown.
Glenorchy & the Head of the Lake
Forty-five minutes up the lake's western shore to a village of a few hundred, the Dart and Rees valleys, the Routeburn trailhead and the scenery that stood in for Middle-earth.

Getting about
- Orbus buses run a cheap flat-fare network with a Bee Card or contactless payment between the town centre, Frankton and the airport, Arrowtown, Arthurs Point, Kelvin Heights and Fernhill; there are no trains. A small ferry crosses the Frankton Arm from Bayview to the town in summer.
- The town centre is walked, and parking in it is scarce and expensive. The Queenstown Trail's cycle paths link the town, Frankton, Arrowtown and the Gibbston wineries, and bike hire is everywhere.
- Queenstown Airport (ZQN) is in Frankton, ten minutes from the centre, with direct flights from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and the Australian east coast. Coaches run to Christchurch (around eight hours), Dunedin, Te Anau and Milford Sound.
- A hire car is worth it for Glenorchy, Wānaka and the ski fields; drive on the left, carry chains in winter (the ski roads require them), and treat the Crown Range and the Milford road with respect in ice.
Health
- Dial 111. Lakes District Hospital in Frankton is small and serious cases are flown to Dunedin or Invercargill; the Queenstown Medical Centre and pharmacies in town and Frankton handle the rest.
- ACC, the national no-fault accident scheme, covers injury treatment for visitors as well as residents — which matters in a town that sells bungy jumps — but it does not cover illness or repatriation, so carry travel insurance.
- Sun, cold and weather are the hazards: UV is fierce, the mountains change in an hour, and hikers should check the Department of Conservation alerts, carry layers and tell someone their route. Avalanche risk is real in the backcountry in winter.
Work & study
- There is no university; the University of Otago is three and a half hours away in Dunedin, and local training runs through the Southern Institute of Technology's Queenstown campus and Queenstown Resort College's hospitality courses.
- Tourism and hospitality are the economy, with construction, real estate, the ski fields, the wine industry, film location work and a small remote-working and tech crowd behind them.
- Working-holiday visa holders staff the town's bars, hotels and ski fields; jobs are easy to find in season and housing is not, so ask employers about staff accommodation before arriving.
Money & manners
- New Zealand dollars; cards and paywave everywhere. Tipping is not expected, GST (15%) is included in prices, and everything costs more than elsewhere in the country. Book beds, cars and the popular activities well ahead for July and August and for December to February.
- The manners are the South Island's — casual, first names, outdoorsy, allergic to fuss. Leave-no-trace is taken seriously, freedom-camping rules are enforced, and nobody feeds the kea.
- Four real seasons: winter from June to August with snow on the peaks and sometimes in town, summer from December to February at 20–30°C with daylight past nine, autumn colour in April and a wet, changeable spring. Winter is a ski season, not a low season.
