The Mother City, with the mountain in the middle of everything
Cape Town is South Africa's oldest city and its most beautiful, a place where Table Mountain stands over the harbour, the beaches and every argument about who the city is for. It is the most visited city in Africa and one of the most divided, and both are on view from the same lookout.
The Dutch East India Company landed Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 to grow vegetables for ships rounding the Cape, on land the Khoikhoi had grazed for centuries, and the refreshment station became a colony worked by enslaved people brought from Madagascar, Mozambique, India and the East Indies, whose descendants are the Cape Malay and Coloured communities of the city today. The British took it in 1795 and for good in 1806. It was the capital of the Cape Colony and, after Union in 1910, the legislative capital of South Africa, which it remains; Parliament sits here. Apartheid was written into the map: District Six was bulldozed in the 1960s and 1970s and its people moved to the Cape Flats, and the townships of Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha were built to keep Black residents out of the centre. Mandela made his first speech as a free man from the balcony of City Hall in 1990.
Table Mountain organises everything, and so does the wind. The City Bowl — the old centre, Long Street, the Company's Garden, Parliament and Bo-Kaap's painted houses — sits between the mountain and Table Bay, with the V&A Waterfront on the harbour edge. The Atlantic Seaboard runs from Green Point around Sea Point and Clifton to Camps Bay: the money, the sunsets and the cold water. The Southern Suburbs — Observatory, Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Constantia — lie behind the mountain on the warmer, leafier side, with the university and the oldest wine farms. The False Bay coast — Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Simon's Town — is surfers, fishing harbours and penguins. Between the mountain and the Hottentots Holland range are the Cape Flats, the sand plains where apartheid put most of the population, and the northern suburbs of Bellville and Durbanville, Afrikaans-speaking and growing fast.
It is an outdoors city before anything else: the cable car or the hike up the mountain, the Sea Point promenade, kite-surfing at Bloubergstrand with the classic view of the mountain behind, the penguins at Boulders and Lion's Head at full moon. The wine is twenty minutes away in Constantia and an hour in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and the restaurants — from La Colombe to a Cape Malay bobotie in Bo-Kaap to fish and chips at Kalk Bay harbour — are the best in the country. Rugby is the religion, with the Stormers at DHL Stadium and a national team that wins World Cups; cricket at Newlands and football at Athlone complete it. Music runs from Cape jazz to the Kaapse Klopse minstrel parade on 2 January, and the Zeitz MOCAA at the Waterfront is the continent's largest contemporary art museum. The braai, the bakkie and the word 'lekker' are universal.
The hard parts are inequality and crime, and they are severe: the city is among the most unequal on earth, gang violence makes parts of the Cape Flats among the most dangerous places in the country, and visitors in the tourist areas need real caution — no walking alone at night, no valuables on show, no hiking solo, and no stopping on the N2 near the airport. The 2018 drought came within weeks of 'Day Zero', and load-shedding power cuts plagued the whole country for years, though they eased in 2024–25. Housing on the Atlantic side is priced for foreign buyers and 'semigrants' from Johannesburg, and transit is poor — the trains barely run and the minibus taxis are for the initiated. What it offers is the most spectacular natural setting of any city, a mild Mediterranean climate, a cost of living that is low in hard currency, and a creative, wine-soaked, sea-facing way of life that is hard to leave.

Getting about
- MyCiTi bus rapid transit runs from the airport, along the Atlantic Seaboard and into the City Bowl, paid with a myconnect card; Golden Arrow buses serve the suburbs. Metrorail's Southern Line to Simon's Town is the scenic route when it is running, which is not always.
- Uber and Bolt are the practical way around and are cheap; do not hail minibus taxis unless you know the system, and do not walk far after dark. A hire car is worth it for the peninsula, the wine lands and the Southern Suburbs — drive on the left.
- Cape Town International (CPT) is around 20 minutes east on the N2; take the MyCiTi A01 bus to the Civic Centre or an Uber, and do not stop on the N2 through the airport stretch.
- The City Bowl, the Sea Point promenade and the Waterfront are walkable by day. Cycling is for the promenade and the mountain trails, not the main roads.
Health
- Groote Schuur (where the first heart transplant was done), the private Mediclinic and Netcare hospitals and the Red Cross children's hospital; private care is excellent and expects insurance or payment. Dial 10111 for police, 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from a mobile.
- Pharmacies (Clicks, Dis-Chem) are everywhere and most have a clinic nurse; tap water is safe to drink.
- The sun, the mountain and the sea are the hazards: use sunscreen, never hike alone or without water and a warm layer, and respect the rips and the cold on the Atlantic beaches. Take travel insurance; malaria is not a concern in the Western Cape.

- The University of Cape Town, on the mountain slopes at Rondebosch, is the highest-ranked in Africa; Stellenbosch is 50 minutes east, and the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology add to it.
- Tourism, finance and insurance (Old Mutual, Sanlam), a strong tech and start-up sector, film production, wine, fishing, the port and Parliament are the employers; call centres and remote work for overseas companies are common.
- Foreigners need a work or critical-skills visa arranged in advance, and a remote-work visa was introduced in 2024. Unemployment is high across the city and the job market is competitive.
Money & manners
- South African rand; cards and tap are near-universal, and cash is for car guards (a few rand) and tips. Tip 10–15% in restaurants and a little to petrol attendants; VAT (15%) is included in prices.
- Capetonians are relaxed to the point of unpunctual ('now-now' means later, 'just now' means possibly never) and polite; English is the lingua franca but Afrikaans and isiXhosa are the mother tongues of most of the city. The braai is the social event.
- Summer (December to February) is hot, dry and windy — the south-easter, the 'Cape Doctor', can blow for days; winter (June to August) is wet and mild with the mountain under cloud. Autumn is the best season. Water is precious, and the city remembers 2018.
